Pronunciation
How do you say Placemoir?
The short answer: “place”, then the end of “memoir”.
PLACE-mwahr
- IPA, American
- /ˈpleɪs.mwɑːr/
- IPA, British
- /ˈpleɪs.mwɑː/
- Syllables
- 2 · place · moir
- Stress
- On the first, PLACE
Why is it said that way?
Placemoir is “place” plus “memoir”. Memoir came into English from the French mémoire, memory, and kept its French ending: the “-oir” is said “-wahr”, as in memoir, boudoir and reservoir.
So Placemoir is a memoir of places, and it sounds like one: drop the “me” from memoir and put “place” in front.
What are the common mix-ups?
- place-MORE: the “-oir” is “-wahr”, not “-or”.
- place-MOY-er: “oi” here is the French “wah”, not “oy” as in boy.
- pla-SEM-wahr: it starts with “place”, one syllable.
- place-MWAHR: close, but the stress goes on PLACE, like MEM-wahr.
Any of these will still find you the right app, and I won’t mind.
How do you write it?
Placemoir: one word, with a capital P and the rest lowercase. Not PlaceMoir, Place Moir or PLACEMOIR. The logo is an all-lowercase italic wordmark, but in a sentence the name takes a capital P like any other.
Siri said it differently.
Siri and VoiceOver read app names with their own voices, and a new word can come out a little off. The way it’s written on this page is how I say it.
