In simple terms
- Your journal stays on your devices and, if iCloud is on, in your personal iCloud account, which we can't see
- There's no account, no ads, no tracking, and no analytics in the app
- The app doesn't send us crash reports or usage data
- To find places and fill in the weather, the app sends a search or an approximate location to Apple Maps and Apple Weather. It never sends your notes, ratings, photos or memos
- Importing from Photos or from a Google Maps export happens on your device. Only place lookups go to Apple Maps
- The app uses your location, camera, microphone and photo library only when you choose a feature that needs them, and only after you allow it
- Face ID is handled by Apple on your device. We never receive your face data
- If you email us for help, we see your email address and your message
- This website sets no cookies. It uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views in aggregate and can't identify you
- We don't sell your data, and you can export your journal or delete all of it at any time from the You tab

Introduction
Tweeting Birds LLC (“Tweeting Birds,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what happens to your information when you use the Placemoir app for iPhone and iPad (“App”) and when you visit our website at placemoir.app (“Website”).
The short version: Placemoir is a private journal. It is designed so that what you write about the places you visit never reaches us.
Information you keep in the App
When you use Placemoir, you may add the following. It is stored in the App on your device (and in your iCloud account if iCloud is on for Placemoir). We do not receive it:
- Places: the names, addresses, categories and map locations of places you save, including places on your Want to go list
- Visits: the date and time of each visit, the weather, your rating and whether you'd go back, and your notes
- Attachments: photos you take or choose from your library, voice memos you record, and files you attach, such as receipts or booking confirmations
- Settings: your preferences, such as rating style, temperature unit, theme, app icon and whether the App is locked with Face ID
Information that leaves your device
The App does not collect information that identifies you. A few features need to ask an outside service for help, and this is the complete list of what is sent:
- Place search and suggestions (Apple Maps): when you search for a place, or let the App suggest the place you're standing in, the App sends your search text or your current location to Apple Maps and shows the results. Maps also load map tiles for the area you're viewing. Apple handles these requests under Apple's Privacy Policy, and we do not receive them.
- Weather (Apple Weather): when Fill in weather is on, the App asks Apple Weather, through Apple's WeatherKit service, for the conditions at a place on the date and hour of your visit. The request carries only that place's coordinates, rounded to about 100 meters, and the date. It does not carry your notes, your rating, the name of the place, or anything that identifies you to us. Apple handles these requests under Apple's Privacy Policy, and we do not receive them. The App shows the Apple Weather mark and a link to Apple Weather's data sources wherever weather appears. You can turn this off in You › Fill in weather.
- iCloud sync: if iCloud is on for Placemoir, your journal syncs through your personal iCloud account, managed by Apple. See Data storage and security.
- Purchases: if you buy anything in the App, Apple processes the transaction through the App Store. We do not receive your name, Apple Account or payment information.
Nothing else leaves your device unless you choose to send it, for example by exporting your journal or sharing a file.
Importing places
- Import from Photos: when you pick photos to import, the App reads the location and time stored in those photos, on your device, to suggest places and visit dates. It reads only the photos you pick, and nothing from them is sent to us. To name a place, the App may look up its coordinates in Apple Maps, as described above.
- Import from Google Maps: when you pick the files from a Google Takeout export, the App reads your saved and visited places from them on your device. The files are not uploaded anywhere. The App looks each place up in Apple Maps to match it, which sends that place's name or coordinates to Apple, and we do not receive them. The App does not connect to your Google account.
Reminders
Quick capture can remind you to finish an entry later. The reminder is a local notification that the App schedules on your device, after asking your permission the first time. Nothing about it is sent to a server, and you can turn notifications off in your device's Settings.
Location, camera, microphone and photos
The App asks for these permissions only when you first use a feature that needs one, and you can change your answer at any time in your device's Settings:
- Notifications: to remind you to finish an entry you started with quick capture. Reminders are scheduled on your device.
- Location (while using the App): to suggest the place you're standing in and fill in its weather. The App never tracks your location in the background, and it does not keep a history of where you've been beyond the places you choose to save.
- Camera: to take photos of the places you visit.
- Microphone: to record voice memos for your entries.
- Photo library: to add photos you choose to an entry, or to import places from the location and time stored in photos you pick.
- Face ID: to lock your journal so only you can open it. The check happens on your device through Apple. We never receive your face data.
Anything these features capture is kept with that entry in your journal, on your device and in your iCloud account if iCloud is on. We never receive it.
What we do not collect
- The App does not ask for your name, email address or any account details. There are no accounts
- The App does not use advertising networks, ad tracking or an advertising identifier
- The App does not use analytics services that record what you tap, read or save
- The App does not send crash or performance reports to us or to any third party
- The App does not access your contacts
- We do not sell your data to anyone
If you have chosen in your device settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may provide us with aggregated crash and usage statistics under Apple's Privacy Policy. These do not identify you to us.
Emails you send us
If you contact us for support or with feedback, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. We use these only to reply to you and to fix problems you report.
How your information is used
- Your journal: stored on your device to provide the App's features
- iCloud sync: kept in step across your devices through your personal iCloud account
- Place search, weather and imports: used only to answer the request you made
- Support: emails you send are used only to answer you
We do not use any information for advertising, to build a profile of you, or to make automated decisions about you.
Data storage and security
On your device
- Your journal, photos, memos and files are stored in the App on your device and protected by your device's built-in encryption
- We cannot access your device data
- Your journal works offline
In iCloud
- If iCloud is on for Placemoir, your journal is stored in the private database of your personal iCloud account
- We use Apple's CloudKit, which Apple encrypts in transit and at rest, and end to end if you turn on Apple's Advanced Data Protection
- We cannot access your iCloud data
No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, so we can't promise absolute security. But because your journal never reaches our servers, there is very little of it for us to protect or lose.
Your choices and control
- View and edit: everything you've written is in the App, and you can change it at any time
- Delete: delete any entry from its menu, or erase your whole journal with You › Delete all data, next to Export. With iCloud on, deletions sync to your other devices and your iCloud account
- Export: export your whole journal, with every photo, memo and file, from You › Export journal
- iCloud: turn iCloud sync for Placemoir on or off in Settings › [your name] › iCloud. Deleting the App does not delete your iCloud data; you can remove it in your iCloud storage settings
- Permissions: change location, camera, microphone and photo access in your device's Settings
Because we never receive your journal, we can't view, export or delete it for you. These controls are in your hands.
This website
placemoir.app is a static website hosted on GitHub Pages and delivered through Cloudflare. It sets no cookies, loads no advertising or tracking scripts, and loads its fonts from this site rather than from a third party. If you choose a light or dark theme, your browser remembers that choice in its local storage on your device; it is never sent to us.
Web analytics
The website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views, so we can see which pages people find useful. It sets no cookies, does not fingerprint your browser for advertising, does not track you across other sites, and gives us only aggregate numbers, such as visits per page. It cannot identify you, and we couldn't use it to do so if we wanted to. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy. The App does not use it.
Server logs
Like any web host, GitHub and Cloudflare receive standard request information when you load a page (such as your IP address, the time and the page requested) and keep it in their server logs as part of running their services, under GitHub's Privacy Statement and Cloudflare's Privacy Policy. We do not use these logs to identify or track visitors.
Children's privacy
Placemoir is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the higher age set by the law where you live). If you believe a child has sent us personal information, for example by emailing us, contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it.
Service providers
The companies involved in running Placemoir are Apple (App Store, iCloud, Apple Maps, Apple Weather and Face ID) and GitHub and Cloudflare (hosting and delivering this website, and Cloudflare's cookieless website analytics). Each receives only what it needs to provide its service. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect our rights or the safety of others, or to a successor if Tweeting Birds or the App is transferred, in which case this policy will continue to apply to that information.
Data retention
- Your journal: kept on your device until you delete it, use Delete all data, or delete the App
- iCloud data: kept in your iCloud account according to your settings and Apple's policies
- Purchase history: kept by Apple according to its policies
- Support emails: kept only as long as we need them to help you; ask and we'll delete them
- Server request logs: kept by our hosting provider according to its own policies
International data transfers
Tweeting Birds is based in the United States. Your journal stays on your devices or in your iCloud account, where Apple manages any transfers under its privacy policy. The limited information that reaches us, such as support emails, is processed in the United States. Where the law of your country requires it, these transfers rely on safeguards offered by the provider, such as Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you and get a copy of it, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw any consent you've given. We extend these rights to everyone, wherever they live.
Most of your information never reaches us, so the fastest way to exercise these rights over your journal is in the App itself (see Your choices and control). For anything we do hold, such as support emails, email [email protected]. We will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.
California and other U.S. states
- Categories we collect: identifiers (your email address, only if you email us) and internet activity on this website (aggregate page views and server request logs). We disclose them only to the service providers listed above
- No sale or sharing: we do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and have not done so in the past 12 months
- Sensitive information: we do not collect sensitive personal information. Precise location used for place suggestions and weather is processed on your device and by the services described above, and is not collected by us
- Your rights: you may request to know, correct or delete personal information we hold, use an authorized agent, and appeal our response by replying to it
European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland
- Data controller: Tweeting Birds LLC is the controller for support emails. Apple is the controller for iCloud, App Store, Apple Maps and Apple Weather data
- Legal bases: we process support emails to respond to your request and for our legitimate interest in supporting the App
- Portability and erasure: you can export your journal or delete all of it in the App at any time; for support emails, ask us
- Complaints: you may complain to your local data protection authority, though we'd appreciate the chance to help first
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the “Last updated” date above and tell you about significant changes in the App or its App Store update notes before they take effect. We will not use information we already hold in a materially different way without your consent where the law requires it.
